Tune-Yards Perform New Album & Tour at Beachland on Sunday 10/28!

Manned by Merrill Garbus, the Tune-Yards have done quite an evolution since its debut cerca 2009. Garbus began producing music using looping devices and her talents of playing the ukulele, drums and singing back in 2006, but it wasn’t until around 2009 when she first used a simple Dictaphone to capture every aspect of sound and mixed on GarageBand to produce her first album, Bird-Brains.

Soon after, Garbus recruited Nate Brenner on bass and moved to Oakland to produce the second album, whokill, making it the band’s first studio recorded album. Touching on themes of femininity and sexuality, the album was deemed Album of the Year in the Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop poll by 700 of America’s most prestigious music critics.

Their third album, Nikki Nack, explored the mixing of genres and brought in a variety of musical influences, including Frank Ocean, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Shakira and M.I.A., who all had roles in producing the album.

Their newest album, I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life, is the duo’s most creative and sophisticated album to date. Garbus, who writes the majority of the songs, embarked on a six-month meditation workshop to learn about her experiences as a white woman at the forefront of social justice. Garbus puts all the cards on the table in lyrics touching on climate change, white privilege, sexual and racial fragility all packaged within a light, house-music-meets-disco album.

To continue her musical role exploring social issues, Garbus also started C.L.A.W., the Collaborative Legions of Artful Womxn, a radio project featuring female producers and artists. The monthly guide showcases female-identifying producers, instrumentalists and vocalists that are making big moves within the music industry. The show also pairs two performers together for an epic once-in-a-lifetime collaboration, exploring the blending of musical influences and genres.

Garbus and Brenner are joined by nine musicians on their tour, adding in live percussion, saxophone and additional vocals to their new album. Having collaborated with Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne and Mavis Staples, the Tune-Yards are now teaming up with Toronto-based musical project, U.S. Girls and embarking on a national tour to give the United States a full dose of electric-pop. Meghan Remy is the face of this feminine-pop project, blending into the Tune-Yards themes of gender inequality and abuse.

Preparing for their tour together, Garbus and Remy just produced a power-duo Talkhouse Podcast, talking about the challenges of musicians within the changing music industry, playing music festivals, undoing white privilege, action movies and more. The two jump-start their national tour on October 18 in the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles, California, before making their way to the Ballroom on October 28!
